AREAS OF PRACTICE
Education Law
Mr. Pickett's practice is devoted almost entirely to education law. In addition to representing numerous school districts throughout Arizona, he represents Northern Arizona University and several community college districts. His education law practice emphasizes employment matters, student rights and responsibilities and governance issues.
Employment and Labor Law
Mr. Pickett has practiced both public and private sector employment law since 1974, primarily representing federal, state and local government employers in employment disputes, discrimination investigations, wrongful discharge claims and civil rights proceedings.
Estate Planning and Probate
Mr. Pickett oversees the firm's estate planning and probate practice, including preparation of estate planning documents, contested and uncontested probates, and elder law.
Honors and Distinctions
Mr. Pickett has served as a Judge Pro Tem on the Arizona Court of Appeals and a special education due process hearing officer.
Mr. Pickett has spoken at the Arizona School Boards Association School Law Conference since 1983 and several times for the Arizona School Administrators. He has also addressed educators statewide and nationally on the subjects of employee background investigations in the school setting, child abuse reporting and prevention of school violence.
Following the tragic deaths of 14 students and a teacher at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, the F.B.I. convened a week-long Symposium bringing together some of the nation's leading mental health and safety experts, along with teachers, administrators and police officials who were involved in nearly all the school shootings in the past decade. Mr. Pickett was one of three school attorneys from across the country invited by the F.B.I. to participate in this Symposium.
Mr. Pickett is a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary of the National School Boards Association Council of School Attorneys, a professional association of more than 3,000 school attorneys from across the nation devoted to advocating for the interests of elected school district governing boards, their administrative teams and the children they serve.
